Mahama launches Adwumawura programme to build youth businesses

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a bold new initiative aimed at turning the ambitions of thousands of young Ghanaians into thriving businesses.

Speaking at a colourful ceremony in Kumasi on Monday [April 28, 2025], President Mahama officially unveiled the Adwumawura Programme — a plan designed to create 40,000 youth-owned businesses across the country over the next four years.

“Our goal is clear: at least 10,000 new Ghanaian youth businesses every year,” he said, addressing an enthusiastic crowd of young entrepreneurs, traditional leaders, development partners, and government officials.

President Mahama stressed that this time, things will be different. Unlike past youth initiatives that were launched “with a lot of fanfare but proved to be mirages without adequate funding,” he assured that the Adwumawura Programme is fully funded, with resources already secured under the 2025 national budget through the Ministry of Finance.

The programme promises much more than just cash. Participants will receive business development training, access to financing, mentorship, marketing support, and year-round advisory services critical tools to help them turn ideas into lasting businesses.

Oversight will fall under the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), now operating through the newly created Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.

Importantly, President Mahama emphasized that Adwumawura is open to all young Ghanaians, whether or not they have formal education.

“Many of the big businesses we admire today started as small ideas,” he said. “With the right support, young Ghanaians can build businesses that not only change their own lives but also grow our national economy.”

Applications for the first batch of beneficiaries are now open, with an independent selection committee set to supervise a transparent recruitment process.
