Mahama presses contractors to deliver Ofankor-Nsawam road by mid-2026

President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors on the Ofankor-Nsawam Road project to complete works by the end of June 2026, insisting that commuters deserve urgent relief from years of gridlock and delays.

Touring the site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, with the Roads Minister, the President acknowledged progress but urged contractors to keep traffic flowing during construction.

“I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from now till you finish the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as you are working,” Mr. Mahama said. “We will hold you to your word by the end of the second quarter next year you should be finished.”

The 19.5km Ofankor-Nsawam stretch, a key highway linking Accra to the Eastern Region, has been plagued by missed deadlines since construction began in July 2022 under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Originally slated for completion in July 2024, the project has suffered repeated delays tied to funding shortfalls.

Frustration has mounted among drivers and residents, who have staged protests over the choking traffic and health risks from dust and fumes.

Mahama’s directive is aimed at restoring public confidence and holding contractors accountable as government pushes to deliver one of the country’s most critical road corridors.
