Mahama relaunches national sanitation day Sept 6

President John Dramani Mahama will on Saturday, September 6, 2025, relaunch the National Sanitation Day (NSD) as part of a renewed national drive to rid the country of filth and enforce discipline in public spaces.

The programme, first introduced in 2014 under his administration, is being revived under the Clean Ghana Agenda to empower local assemblies and strengthen enforcement of sanitation laws.

It had been abandoned after 2016 but is returning as a flagship of the government’s Reset Ghana reforms.

Ahead of the relaunch, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to begin clearing choked drains, public spaces, and ceremonial streets from 8:00 a.m. daily starting September 4.

He warned that any MMDCE who fails to enforce sanitation laws risks dismissal.

With 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) already released to the MMDAs, the minister said lack of resources will no longer be accepted as an excuse for poor sanitation delivery.

He further announced the introduction of a dedicated sanitation hotline for citizens to report filthy spaces directly.

Mr. Ibrahim urged assemblies to mobilise officers, private waste contractors, and volunteers to sustain the clean-up exercise, describing the reintroduction of NSD as “a defining moment and a renewed social contract between government and citizens anchored on accountability, enforcement, and sustainability.”

Assemblies will be benchmarked over the next six months to progressively eliminate unsightly scenes of filth in towns and cities.
