Ministers and state agencies to switch to electric vehicles – Jinapor

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) for all ministers, government agencies, and Members of Parliament operating in Accra.

This initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader energy transition agenda and climate commitments.

At the unveiling of a 60 kW solar-powered EV charging station on June 26, Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh revealed plans to present a Cabinet proposal for deploying electric vehicles (EVs) across all ministries and agencies in Accra.

The initiative is intended to set a national example, with government fleets acting as early adopters to drive broader public acceptance.

Jinapor highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of EVs, noting their lower operational costs, potential to reduce commuter fares, and insulation from global fuel price volatility.

The government has unveiled a solar-powered EV charging station developed with GIZ, featuring a 60 kW charger and a 60 kWh battery bank, marking a strong step toward renewable energy integration.

Additionally, plans are underway to convert existing fuel stations into EV charging hubs, leveraging current infrastructure to accelerate the nationwide rollout of fast-charging capabilities.

The government’s adoption of electric vehicles signals strong leadership and encourages public confidence in clean energy transition.

It enhances energy security by reducing dependence on fuel imports, cuts long-term costs for both the state and citizens, and supports Ghana’s broader climate and sustainability goals under the Paris Agreement.

The proposal to transition government fleets to electric vehicles is now awaiting Cabinet approval. Once endorsed, the government will begin procuring and deploying EVs across ministries and agencies.

Concurrently, Ghana will scale up charging infrastructure by converting existing fuel stations and expanding solar-powered hubs.

Supporting legislation and regulatory frameworks will also be introduced to guide and standardise nationwide EV adoption.
