The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has paid glowing tribute to female head porters popularly known as ‘’kayaye’’ for their resilience, courage, and strength in the face of daily hardship.
In a speech read on her behalf by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, at a special Mother’s Day dinner, she reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering young women across the country.
The event brought together hundreds of young women working as head porters in Accra to celebrate their sacrifices, recognize their value, and reaffirm their place in the country’s future.
“The evening is dedicated to you, our resilient young women, daughters, sisters, and friends who, despite life’s challenges, rise each day with unwavering courage and strength,” she said. “You embody the essence of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of dreams,” she added.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the Government’s ‘RESET’ agenda is incomplete without the voices and needs of these young women.
“How then do we RESET without you? You are an integral part of our RESET agenda,” she said.
She further noted that Mother’s Day goes beyond celebrating biological mothers.
“It is a moment to honor every woman and girl who carries within her the spirit of love, sacrifice, care, and perseverance,” she said,
She acknowledged the many young women present who serve as caregivers and breadwinners despite facing numerous obstacles.
“Today, we celebrate you because you matter. Your hard work, your dreams and your perseverance have not gone unnoticed. You are not alone, and you are never forgotten,” she said.
On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and herself, the Vice President pledged continued support to ensure a Ghana where every girl can “grow with dignity, opportunity, and purpose.”
