A major drug bust at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) Sunday afternoon has led to the arrest of a passenger who had arrived on an Emirates flight with substance suspected to be cannabis.
The passenger was found in possession of 92 slabs of cannabis weighing 53.60 kilograms at the time of arrest.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the arrest, which also implicated a Ghana Customs officer and a third accomplice.
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue into the smuggling attempt and potential network behind the illicit operation.
NACOC, in recent times, has made many arrests at the country’s premier airport where persons try to use as a transit point to smuggle hard drugs to Europe, Asia, UK, America and other parts of the world.
NACOC has intensified its operations this year, leading to the arrest of dozens of drug traffickers at the country’s points of entry as well as other parts of the country.
Few weeks ago, NACOC intercepted a shipment containing substances suspected to be cocaine at the Swiss Port in Tema.
At the time of the bust, officials found 73 slabs of suspected cocaine weighing approximately 89.74 kilograms.
The illicit cargo was being packaged for export to the Netherlands.
Deputy Director-General for NACOC, Mr Alexander Twum Barimah told XYZ News that Government would do its best to ensure that Ghana is not used as a transit point for drug trafficking.
“You have been hearing about the arrests of drug traffickers in recent times because we have intensified out surveillance and not ready to shield anyone irrespective of their status,” he said on Dwaboase breakfast show on TV XYZ.
