The National Identification Authority (NIA) has expanded its online application and appointment booking system for the Ghana Card to four more regions, Eastern, Ashanti, Northern, and Volta, as part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency and accessibility in the national identification process.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the NIA Headquarters in Accra.
The digital service extension will now allow residents in these regions to complete their registration or update applications and schedule appointments from the comfort of their homes or offices.
According to Darlas Ampomoah William, Head of the NIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, the digital platform is already easing congestion at registration centres.
“Those of you who have been here before knowing that the headquarters used to be overcrowded. Now, it’s no longer like that,” Mr. William stated, noting the visible impact of the digitalisation initiative.
He assured the public that the online application system is fully compliant with the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), emphasizing the NIA’s commitment to protecting citizens’ personal data while modernizing service delivery nationwide.
In a separate update, Mr. Ampomoah outlined the NIA’s intensified efforts to root out illegal attempts to fraudulently acquire Ghana Cards.
He disclosed that the Authority has successfully prosecuted one offender, who is currently serving an eight-month prison sentence, and that 13 additional cases are under investigation.
“We were in court just last week with seven Nigerians who attempted to register for the citizen’s card. God willing, we’ll reappear with them on Wednesday, August 6, and we are hopeful of securing convictions,” Mr. Ampomoah said.
He also warned that non-Ghanaians convicted of such offences will be deported after serving their sentences, adding that the NIA is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure full compliance with the law.
Mr. Ampomoah issued a stern caution to Ghanaians who aid foreigners in fraudulent registration, stressing that such acts will attract full legal consequences.
“Anyone who facilitates these illegal registrations will be prosecuted. We are committed to protecting the integrity of our national identification system,” he affirmed.
The NIA continues to urge the public to use only approved channels and to report any suspicious registration activities to the nearest authorities.
