The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announces it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late MP, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The decision, taken at a National Steering Committee meeting on August 11, was based on the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and concerns about further political polarization.
The party described it as “inhumane and unconscionable” to engage in a competitive contest so soon after the tragedy, warning that by-elections often bring tension and acrimony.
The NPP says, the greatest tribute it could pay the late MP is to focus on unity and the fight against illegal mining, while ensuring a smooth and peaceful replacement for the people of Tamale Central.
The party stressed that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations, it will abstain from the contest in line with what it described as the national interest.
