The Running Mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana OpokuAgyemang, has condemned government for paying lip service to promises resulting in the worsening conditions of fishers and fishing communities
She blames this on the politicization and selective approach to government support including access to premix fuel and outboard motors, over the past seven years.
She said fish has no political colour, adding that it is disheartening that the government is politicizing the fishing industry and thereby denying fisher folks their livelihood.
Addressing NDC supporters at Funko, a fishing community in the Ahanta West constituency as part of her three-day campaign tour of the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang notes with concern that fisher folks cannot continue to suffer the mess. She therefore urged them to vote for change by voting out the government.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reminded the people NDC’s track record of improving the fishing industry through the provision of outboard motors on credit basis and better management premix fuel fuel policy through a decentralized system managed by chief fishermen and their local teams
She assured that the next NDC government will subsidise the price of outboard motors and make premix fuel available to all fishing communities.
Chief fisherman at Funko, Nana Yalley, was hopeful that the NDC will win the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections to implement its policies and improve the quality of life of fisher folks.
