The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly condemned the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice and Justice of the Supreme Court, describing it as a direct assault on Ghana’s democratic foundation.
Speaking to journalists in Akwatia on Tuesday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the procedure adopted by the Pwamang Committee in recommending her dismissal.
He argued that the committee acted prematurely by concluding the process without completing hearings on all charges.
“We are mourning democracy,” he said. “You claim that you have charges against the Chief Justice.
You are done with count one, counts two and three are not concluded, and then you dismiss the person. That is the work of the Pwamang Committee? That is what Pwamang did as a judge?”
His concerns have been reinforced by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, who openly defended Justice Torkornoo.
According to him, the former Chief Justice had committed no offence meriting removal, and the allegations were mishandled.
Mr. Otoo also accused the committee of disregarding judicial travel policies when reviewing issues related to her entitlements.
He warned that the precedent undermines judicial independence and threatens public trust in the rule of law.
