The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has warned it will take legal action against Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) that permit the erection of billboards on road medians.
The warning comes after a clearance exercise in the Ayawaso West Municipality on Tuesday, during which the NRSA dismantled several unauthorized structures.
The Authority said such billboards obstruct motorists’ vision and increase the risk of crashes and pedestrian knockdowns.
Acting Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, expressed disappointment in the assemblies for failing to act despite repeated notices.
“We have written to the assemblies to remove these billboards; they have failed to remove them, so we have taken it upon ourselves to remove them,” he said.
Mr. Amaliba added that advertisers whose structures were seized would have to pay administrative fees before reclaiming them.
If they fail to do so, the Authority will auction the billboards to recover costs.
He further warned that assemblies would be held accountable for permitting such illegal erections.
“Any assembly that allows the erection of a billboard, we are going to sue the assembly for engaging in an unlawful act,” he cautioned.
