The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has ordered an immediate suspension of a police-led enforcement operation targeting unlicensed delivery riders across Accra.
A joint enforcement operation by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police on Thursday, August 21, led to the seizure of dozens of motorcycles near the National Theatre, sparking chaos and confrontations captured in a viral video.
Communications Minister Sam George, while acknowledging the legal basis for the crackdown, criticized its poor execution, citing lack of consultation and public awareness.
In response, he ordered an immediate halt to the operation, stressing that “the law must be enforced with a humane face.”
The Minister pledged to engage delivery riders and industry stakeholders to craft a roadmap for enforcement that ensures order without alienating affected groups.
This decision underscores the need for balance, upholding regulatory standards while ensuring that enforcement is fair, transparent, and respectful of livelihoods.
