Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress John Mahama has issued a strong note of caution to the new investor government wants to hand over the Komenda Sugar factory to.
He says his government will not recognize any dubious deal signed by the Akufo Addo-Bawumia led NPP government which clearly know it will be kicked out come December 7, 2024.
‘I am warning you. Stay off in your own interest. My government, when I assume office, will cancel the contract if it finds it unworthy” he emphasized in response to a specific question by Wisdom Hededzorme of XYZ Broadcasting Ltd during his media encounter as part his tour of the Volta region.
It follows public concerns following a statement by Minister of Trade, KT Hammond that government intends to hand over the abandoned facility since NPP assumed office in January 2017, to an Indian investor.
The new investor, West Africa Agro Limited, is currently importing about 550 tonnes of raw sugar to refine into sulphurless white sugar. The company aims to transition to producing sugarcane sugar within three years.
But Mr. Mahama said he will resist any attempt to hand over that state facility which he built from scratch before leaving office in 2016, on silver platter to cronies.
“We must open it up and get the best investor to come and partner with government to run that sugar factory. So whoever it is, I am just sending a note of caution to him. I haven’t seen any transparent process in trying to lease out that sugar factory and if we come and it was not transparent and it was some under the table transfer of a national asset, we will not be very cooperative in that regard and so that is the warning” he stressed
