Stop sleeping;My position on galamsey fight is clear – Mahama replies Akufo Addo

The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has slammed President Akufo Addo for shirking his responsibility to stop the illegal menace and desperately attempting to divert attention.

 

The former President who was directly responding to Nana Akufo Addo’s recent comment described him as a sleeping President who has lost track of what is going on in the country.

 

“ It’s surprising to say the least that Nana Akufo Addo is asking for my position in the fight against illegal mining” – he mocked suggesting his Presidential staffers must update him( Akufo Addo) with what he, Mr Mahama has severally said he will do differently.

 

President Akufo as part of his tour of the Savannah region called on the NDC flag Bearer to make public his position on Galamsey.

 

But addressing a rally at Old Ningo in the Greater Accra region as part of his phase 4 tour of the capital,on Thursday , October 17, 2024, Mr Mahama did not mince words.

 

“. I have spoken extensively on it. It’s either the President is not in the country or he is sleeping’

“My position has been clear throughout my engagement with the Clergy, stakeholders as well as a recent forum at the University of Energy and Natural Resources” he emphasized

 

John Mahama also called on the President to stop shifting the goal post and tackle the problems head-on.

 

“It is his responsibility. The people of Ghana elected him. He is currently the President of Ghana. And it is his responsibility to deal with galamsay now” he explained

 

Mr Mahama however reiterated his pledge that the next administration will not shirk responsibility as Akufo Addo has to protect forest reserves, water bodies and tbe environment at large.

 

“On 7th December when the people of Ghana vote for us we will come and sort out illegal mining” he assured
