Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) says the faulty elevator at its Surgical Department will be fully repaired and operational within the next two months.
The assurance comes after the Neurological Department raised concerns that the breakdown of one of its two elevators was disrupting the smooth transfer of patients for emergency surgeries.
During a visit by Parliament’s Health Committee on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, KBTH Chief Executive Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam explained that delays in approvals at the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) had stalled the repair works.
“The procurement has been done. There was some delay with the PPA, but it was finally approved, and we have given it to the vendor.
The vendor has also engaged the manufacturer, and we have been assured that within two months, the elevator should be installed and operational. At the moment, only one elevator is working,” Dr. Adam said.
The KBTH CEO also urged Parliament to expedite legislation on organ harvesting, arguing that it would drastically cut costs for patients needing transplants.
He noted that while Ghana has the expertise for kidney and cornea transplants, patients are currently forced to travel abroad or rely on imported organs due to the absence of enabling laws.
“Anyone who needs a kidney transplant must travel to India, America, or the UK. For cornea transplants, we import corneas from America at $3,000–$4,000.
With legislation, we could harvest corneas locally and bring the cost down to about GH¢500,” Dr. Adam stressed.
