Tension at Abossey Okai as spare parts dealers issue 3-day ultimatum to foreign traders

Tension is mounting at the Abossey Okai Spare Parts enclave after the Spare Parts Dealers Association issued a three-day ultimatum to foreign retailers to shut down their businesses.

The development follows an enforcement exercise on Monday, led by association executives, to identify shops allegedly owned by foreigners in violation of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865), which reserves retail trade for Ghanaian citizens.

Several foreign shop owners reportedly closed their outlets ahead of the exercise to avoid confrontation.

Security personnel were deployed to the enclave to maintain calm.

General Secretary of the Association, Gifty Lovelock Naana Fianu, warned that if government fails to act within the three-day deadline, members will resort to citizens’ arrest as provided under Section 27(1) of the GIPC Act.

“The activities of these traders, which contravene Ghana’s investment laws, are distorting competition and threatening the survival of local businesses. We will not allow this illegality to continue,” she said.

The Association stressed that its actions are aimed at restoring fairness in the sector and urged government to step in swiftly to avert escalation.
