Parliament descended into a heated exchange on Tuesday 31 July 2025 during the presentation of the mid-year budget, as Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga accused the Minority of reckless financial mismanagement during their time in government.
Mr. Ayariga aimed his criticism squarely at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, citing the controversial $280 million Bank of Ghana headquarters project, which he said far exceeded its original estimated cost of $81 million.
The Majority Leader’s remarks came in direct response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who had earlier criticized the current administration for what he described as a lack of financial commitment—alleging that the government was stalling critical developmental projects inherited from the previous NPP administration.
But Mr. Ayariga rejected the claims, insisting that the Mahama-led government is committed to fiscal responsibility and prudent governance, and would not repeat what he termed the wasteful spending patterns of the previous regime.
The exchange underscored the deepening partisan divide in Parliament as the House debates the country’s economic path forward.
