Veep Opoku-Agyemang pledges gov’t commitment to revive Komenda sugar factory

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to tackling key development challenges in the Komenda Traditional Area, with a focus on road rehabilitation and reviving the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited.

She gave the assurance at the grand durbar of the 2025 Komendaman Nyeyi Festival in the Central Region.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the significance of the festival, describing it as a platform to preserve culture, honour heritage, and strengthen the bond between government and the traditional authority.

The Komenda Traditional Council used the occasion to renew its call for the refurbishment and operationalisation of the sugar factory to create sustainable jobs for the youth.

According to the Council, restoring operations would also boost government’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative.

Paramount Chief of the Komenda Traditional Area, Okatakyie Komeh VIII, urged government to expedite plans to restart the factory, assuring that farmers are ready to supply sugarcane for production.

He also appealed for the expansion of the local landing bay to accommodate more canoes and vessels, noting that this would reduce pressure on the roads and limit damage from heavy cargo trucks.

This year’s festival was held on the theme “Ensuring Sustainability through Education”, highlighting the community’s commitment to using education as a driver of long-term development.
