The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has confirmed that the long-awaited National Occupational Safety and Health Bill (Workplace Safety Bill) will soon be submitted to Parliament for consideration.
Minister Karl Samuda revealed that the first draft of the Bill has been received and further drafting instructions have been issued to the Parliamentary Counsel’s Office, ahead of the formal submission.
This legislation is aimed at strengthening the regulatory framework for occupational safety and health (OSH) in Ghana, including protections for workers, hazard prevention, and workplace welfare.
In February 2023, the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko-Brobby, noted that the Bill had lingered for more than 30 years and assured that it would be passed within the current Parliament’s lifetime.
The Bill’s passage is viewed as a critical step in aligning Ghana’s workplace protections with international best-practices and enhancing labour standards ahead of evolving economic and industrial demands.
