Ghana will complete the assignment of 5G spectrum and start deployment by December 2026, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, September 7, 2026, Mr George said the timeline forms part of efforts to improve the quality and reliability of telecommunications services and expand access to faster mobile connectivity across the country.
The National Communications Authority is expected to finalise the spectrum assignment before the end of the year, after which operators can begin rolling out 5G services. The announcement follows recent regulatory reforms that removed the previous wholesale exclusivity framework, allowing greater competition and private-sector investment in next-generation networks.
Mr George also outlined additional steps to strengthen network performance. These include a road-excavation coordination framework to reduce damage to fibre infrastructure and the establishment of an Emergency Telecommunications Framework. Operators will be required to meet higher network-quality standards under the new arrangements.
“The work is far from finished, and I will not pretend otherwise. But the direction is unmistakable, the results are measurable, and the resolve of this Ministry is unshaken,” he said.
The move supports Ghana’s broader target of achieving 70 per cent 5G population coverage by March 2027.
