President Mahama orders release of food to SHS students to avert closure

President John Mahama has ordered the allocation of food to schools across the country to avert possible closure.

It follows disagreement between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High School (CHASS)

GES has asked schools to reopen on January 3,2025 contrary to the proposal by CHASS for a postponement due to food short. CHASS who was forced to reopen schools subsequently asked parents to provide food for their wards upon resumption.

However speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service at UPSA in Accra on Sunday, January 12, 2025 President Mahama said he has ordered release of food stuck in a warehouse to the school in order that the academic calendar is not truncated.

“We have a challenge with feeding SHS students. I have asked the Chief of Staff to allocate food currently stored at a warehouse in Tema to schools to feed our students so education can continue” he said

The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service was held to appreciate God for a peaceful election and Electoral victory for the National Democratic Congress.

President Mahama said safety during the campaign, the Electoral Victory the dedication to prayer and fasting by the Christian community are the three mathematic reasons the nation needs to thank God.

The event was attended by Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, National Chairman of the NDC John Asiedu Nketia amongst other top NDC officials

Prayers were said for the nation, the President and his family and the government.

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams, Rev. Stephen Wengam, Apostle General, Sam Korankye Ankrah, Archbishop Charles Agyin-Asare, Prophet Owusu Bempah were amongst the reveered clergymen who graced the occasion.
