The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa Central Constituency in the Bono Region, John Adu-Jack, has defended President John Mahama’s recent comment about the mishandling of the country’s economy by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.
The freshman MP who was contributing to a discussion on Dwaboase on TV XYZ Friday morning stated that the previous government did not only mismanage the economy, but also pushed hundreds of thousands of Ghanaians into poverty.
His comment follows President Mahama’s accusation of the previous government over the country’s ailing economy, claiming it managed the economy criminally.
“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” he said. “How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand.”
President Mahama raised these concerns while speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the government announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers.
“Comrades, we know we are your natural allies, we have worked together for many years. One thing that is a cardinal principle for us is to tell the truth at all times. We all knew that the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am discovering myself have been a criminal handling of our economy. Ghana is a crime scene because how a government can be so reckless, I can’t understand it,” he stated.
Mr. Mahama further warned that the country had limited options and that continuing on the same economic trajectory could lead to a complete collapse.
“But we are faced with a reality, our options are very few. We can behave like the ostrich and hide our heads in the sand and let the economy crash, but then what effect will it have on Ghanaian households and everybody?”
The opposition NPP has criticised the government’s decision to increase the base pay by 10%, citing the previous increment for same last year but Adu-Jack believes the Minority in Parliament wants to destruct the government.
“They say the President is complaianing after winning elections. The issue is that he is only revealing to Ghanaians what he came to meet; making us know tyhe real situation as he shares his solutions with the people,” the MP stated in Akan.
President Mahama has directed the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to introduce drastic expenditure cuts, including within the Office of Government Machinery.
