Tensions flared in Adum PZ, Kumasi, following a protest by traders impacted by a devastating fire.
A joint police and military team were deployed to the area to maintain order after traders clashed with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over restrictions on rebuilding efforts.
After the fire, KMA authorities had cordoned off the area, citing the need for official consultations before allowing the rebuilding of businesses.
However, traders, frustrated by the delays and eager to return to work, began dismantling the barricades set up by the assembly, leading to heightened tensions and the arrival of security forces.
In the midst of the standoff, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, a former executive of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), visited the scene to offer support.
He donated relief items to the affected traders and voiced his concerns over the situation, criticizing the decision to deploy armed security forces.
“Stand firm, the youth are behind you,” Kyeremeh encouraged the traders, emphasizing solidarity in the face of adversity.
