Tarkwa Circuit Court sentences Nigerian woman to 20 years for human trafficking and forced abortions

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced 32-year-old Nigerian national, Patience Gold, also known as “Gold,” to 20 years’ imprisonment for trafficking four young women from Nigeria to Ghana for the purpose of prostitution.

Presided over by Judge Hathia Ama Manu, the court heard that Gold unlawfully administered a herbal concoction to one of the victims to terminate a pregnancy.

This act compounded the severity of her offenses, which included human trafficking and the use of trafficked persons for prostitution.

The victims, aged between 12 and 22, were lured from Nigeria under false pretenses and forced into sex work upon arrival in Ghana.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges Ghana faces in combating human trafficking, particularly involving vulnerable individuals from neighboring countries.

Ghana’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) continues to work in collaboration with various stakeholders to address such crimes.

The unit’s mission includes preventing trafficking and rescuing victims.
