President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Brussels, Belgium, as a prominent advocate and ambassador for the GAVI Alliance’s crucial vaccine replenishment efforts.

Ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session in Brussels, President Mahama held several bilateral meetings. Among these were key discussions with a delegation that included the Gavi Board Chair, José Manuel Barroso, and another with American billionaire Mr. Bill Gates.

During their meeting, Mr. Barroso expressed gratitude for President Mahama’s consistent support for Gavi’s vaccine replenishment efforts and highlighted the alliance’s anticipation of his advocacy at the pledging session.

President Mahama and Mr. Gates discussed Ghana’s health sector interventions. Key topics covered included progress on the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the work of the National Vaccine Institute, and the impact of uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS).

On his part, President Mahama thanked Mr. Gates and the Gates Foundation for their extensive philanthropic programmes in Ghana and their vital contribution to the Gavi Vaccine Alliance.

President Mahama will participate in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation, co-hosted by the European Union, the Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance.

The Summit aims to secure vital support for Gavi’s ambitious 2026-2030 strategy. This strategy seeks to immunise an additional 500 million children, save over 8 million lives, and protect against up to 150 disease outbreaks, delivering over $100 billion in economic benefits.
