Over 1,200 victims of sea erosion in the Volta Region have received a significant boost following a GHC 100,000 donation from the National Lotteries Authority (NLA).
The support, channeled through Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu, is part of the NLA’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts aimed at alleviating the plight of displaced and affected residents.
The coastal erosion, which has plagued communities such as Asalako since 2015, has displaced families, destroyed homes, and severely impacted livelihoods.
The NLA’s intervention is expected to help address urgent needs including food, temporary shelter, and clothing.
In a statement, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Director General of the NLA, acknowledged the scale of the crisis but underscored the agency’s desire to offer meaningful support:
“We have chosen to show our good face with some GHC 100,000 to support the process. It may be a drop in the ocean, but we hope it brings some comfort to the victims.”
Receiving the donation on behalf of the region, Hon. James Gunu expressed deep gratitude for the gesture and commended the NLA for its continued commitment to social welfare.
“This donation will provide some much-needed relief to the affected communities,” he said, calling on other organisations and stakeholders to emulate the NLA’s example.
The government is currently working on Phase Two of the Sea Defense Project, a long-term intervention designed to provide a permanent solution to the devastation caused by tidal waves and erosion.
The NLA’s contribution stands as a testament to its dedication to national development and community support, and it is hoped that other institutions will join in providing relief and rebuilding hope for the affected communities.
