Breaking News: Diogo Jota and brother dies in Spain car crash

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother André, 26, tragically died in a car crash on Spain’s A-52 highway near Zamora in the early hours of July 3, 2025.

Their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire, with emergency services unable to save the two men.

Jota’s death comes barely two weeks after he married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. The couple had three young children, deepening the emotional weight of the tragedy.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves for around £41 million, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances.

He helped the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal, scored 14 goals, and won two UEFA Nations League titles.

The Portuguese Football Federation described the deaths as an “irreparable loss” and called for a moment of silence before the national team’s next match.

Messages of condolence have poured in from across the football world, including from Liverpool, UEFA, and fans globally.
