Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, describing him as a symbol of peace, integrity, and nation-first leadership.
The address was delivered at the 13th anniversary commemorative lecture in honour of the late President, held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
In a stirring keynote that blended personal recollections with national reflection, Mr. Debrah praised Professor Mills, fondly known as the Asomdwee Hene (Prince of Peace) for his unmatched humility, incorruptible character, and unwavering commitment to unity.
“His life was a testament to selfless service, a beacon of integrity in public office, and a relentless pursuit of peace,” Mr. Debrah said.
He emphasized that President Mills consistently rose above partisanship, choosing consensus over conflict and placing the welfare of every Ghanaian at the heart of his governance.
Addressing a packed audience of dignitaries including government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, scholars, and NDC supporters, Mr. Debrah urged political actors across the divide to draw inspiration from Professor Mills’s leadership style.
“In these critical times, we must draw strength from Professor Mills’s belief in the Ghanaian spirit and his vision for a united nation,” he noted. “Let us reject the politics of insults and division, and instead embrace dialogue and mutual respect as the bedrock of our progress.”
He further stressed that the late President’s leadership remains a model for those seeking to serve with honesty and humility.
Reflecting on the Better Ghana Agenda, Mr. Debrah reaffirmed the current administration’s commitment to building upon the legacy of Professor Mills, describing him as a man of vision whose policies were anchored in long-term national development.
“True progress demands continuity, foresight, and the courage to act in the national interest,” he said. “These were the values President Mills lived by, and they remain as relevant today as they were over a decade ago.”
The commemorative lecture served not only as a tribute but also as a call to action—to preserve and advance the values that defined the life and leadership of President Mills.
Closing his address, Mr. Debrah reiterated the government’s resolve to uphold the principles Professor Mills stood for: peace, unity, and integrity.
“Let us ensure that his memory is not only honoured in words but in the way we govern, the way we relate to one another, and the vision we hold for Ghana,” he concluded.
