Wontumi FM presenter granted gh₵100k bail over Mahama–helicopter crash comment

A Kumasi-based presenter with Wontumi FM, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, has been granted bail after spending two weeks in custody over comments linking President John Dramani Mahama to the August 6 military helicopter crash that killed eight people.

Asare, who was arrested on August 12 2025, moments after hosting his afternoon programme, has been charged with offensive conduct and publication of false news.

The court on Monday granted him GH₵100,000 bail with two sureties, both required to be civil servants. He is expected back in court on September 1, 2025.

Prosecutors opposed the bail, citing ongoing investigations, but Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah rejected the argument, noting there was no legal basis to keep Asare in custody.

He pointed to a previous case where an individual was remanded for insulting then-President Akufo-Addo, stressing that such precedents should not override constitutional rights to bail.

Lawyers for Asare said they were working to satisfy the bail conditions.
