President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision follows receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori.
After considering the petition and evidence, the Committee concluded that grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established and accordingly recommended her removal.
Justice Torkonoo had earlier been suspended in April this year pending the outcome of the inquiry.
A statement issued on Monday, September 1, 2025, by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said:
“Under Article 146(9), the President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation.”
The statement confirmed that the President has complied with the constitutional requirement and effected the removal.
