John Mahama set to appoint Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie as chief justice

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to nominate Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, as the substantive Chief Justice of Ghana, The Law Platform has reported.

The anticipated appointment follows the removal of Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, who was suspended and later dismissed on the recommendation of the Justice Pwamang Committee of Inquiry.

With the office vacant, Justice Baffoe Bonnie, the most senior member of the Supreme Court bench, is set to take over.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2004, Justice Baffoe Bonnie is widely regarded as one of the country’s most experienced jurists.

He has presided over several high-profile cases, including rulings on injunctions related to the work of the Pwamang Committee.

Since assuming the acting role, he has introduced notable administrative reforms, such as restructuring court officers at the Supreme Court Registry, initiating leadership changes at the Ghana School of Law, and revising cashier operations at the Registry.

If confirmed, he is expected to consolidate these reforms while introducing further measures to strengthen judicial administration and efficiency.

Parliament must vet and approve the nomination before Justice Baffoe Bonnie is formally sworn in as Ghana’s 15th Chief Justice.

Legal observers say his seniority and track record position him strongly to lead the Judiciary into its next phase of reforms.
