Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of security operations in the ongoing Akwatia by-election, assuring that the process remains peaceful and orderly.
“Everything is going on smoothly as planned, and that is what we expect to make sure that at the end of the day, we have a very smooth and peaceful election,” IGP Yohuno told journalists on Tuesday during a monitoring visit.
More than 50,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of Ernest Kumi after a short illness.
The IGP praised the professionalism of personnel deployed, noting that regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board had joined officers on the ground.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of my men,” he said.
Reflecting on lessons from past disturbances, Mr. Yohuno stressed that violent incidents such as those witnessed during the Ablekuma North rerun would not be repeated.
“Ablekuma North violence is a thing of the past. We are moving forward. This election will set the tone for future elections,” he added.
Although the polls have been largely calm, reports of isolated tensions have been recorded.
