New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful for the 2028 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of abusing state power to intimidate opposition members.
Addressing supporters at Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, the former Vice President said a series of politically motivated arrests had targeted NPP leaders and activists since the party lost power.
“We are witnessing what is happening after losing power. Currently, the NDC is intimidating us with power, harassing, and abusing us.
Not long ago, Chairman Wontumi was arrested. Chairman Abronye has also been arrested.
They are arresting our TikTokers, bloggers, appointees,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He described the situation as a wake-up call for the NPP to unite and prepare to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
“It means that all the NPP needs is unity, so that in 2028, we’ll take back the power,” he added.
His remarks followed the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for allegedly causing financial loss to the state, and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye, who was remanded by the Accra Circuit Court for “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.”
Dr. Bawumia insisted that such developments underscore the need for a stronger, united opposition, stressing that the NPP must remain focused and resilient to wrest power back from the NDC.
