10 arrested, three killed as police dismantle rural bank robbery syndicate

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate believed to be behind a string of violent bank robberies across the country.

At a press briefing in Accra, the Director-General of CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the breakthrough followed six months of sustained intelligence work under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

According to her, 10 suspects have been arrested, while three others were killed in a shootout with police. Two members of the gang remain on the run.

The syndicate, led by Akwesi Agyei, alias Cobra, has been linked to a series of robberies targeting banks in the Ashanti, Ahafo, Central, Eastern, and Western Regions.

These include attacks on the Adansi Rural Bank at Fomena, Ecobank at Kenyasi, and the St. Martin De Porres Credit Union at Atonsu Monaco.

Police recovered a large cache of weapons and stolen property, including three AK-47 rifles, seven pump-action guns, pistols, nearly 100 rounds of ammunition, cash in various currencies, six vehicles, four motorbikes, as well as assorted mobile phones and jewellery.

One of the AK-47 rifles was confirmed to be the service weapon of a police officer killed by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso Highway in November 2024, directly linking the syndicate to that fatal attack.

COP Donkor commended the Ashanti Regional Command and all officers who played a role in the operation. She reassured the public of the Service’s commitment to ensuring safety and urged citizens to promptly report suspicious activities.

She also issued a stern warning to criminals:

“No matter how long it takes, the arm of the law will surely catch up with you.”
