NAFCO’s farmgate prices: Nana Ameyaw Manu urges fair pricing

Ghana’s National Vice Chairman of the Peasant Farmers Association, Nana Ameyaw Manu, has called for fair and consistent pricing of foodstuffs following the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s (NAFCO) recent announcement of minimum guaranteed farmgate prices for selected crops.

Speaking on the Dwaboase show with Piesie Okrah, Nana Manu said that while food supply is generally sufficient across the country, many buyers still struggle to afford goods due to high capital demands.

He explained that transportation costs are eroding sellers’ profits, forcing them to set higher prices in urban markets like Kumasi, Cape Coast, and Accra, compared to production areas such as Goaso in the Ahafo Region.

“The lack of warehouses compels farmers and traders to sell at lower prices to avoid losses, while others prefer to sell to wealthy individuals who can afford higher rates,” he noted.

Nana Manu urged traders to adopt what he described as “normal pricing” to make food more affordable for ordinary Ghanaians, including public sector workers.
