Teshie police chief appeals to traditional leaders over rising crime; links surge to youth drug abuse and rider boycotts

The Chief Superintendent of Police at Teshie, Vincent Adotey, has appealed to traditional authorities and elders of the town to join forces with the police in tackling illicit drug abuse among the youth, which he described as the primary driver of the surge in violent crime in the area.

Chief Supt. Adotey made the call during a courtesy visit to the traditional leaders, stressing the economic and reputational toll that the growing wave of robberies and assaults is having on the community.

“The surge in violence and crime, the street robberies, the phone snatches, the fear in our community, is a direct result of these young people being driven by addiction,” he said. “They resort to these criminal acts just to fund their next fix.”

He disclosed that the situation has already led to an effective boycott by commercial transport operators.

“I must inform you of a serious development: Uber and other ride-hailing drivers are now openly refusing to accept trips to Teshie, especially at night. They fear for their lives and their livelihoods. They are scared their vehicles or phones will be snatched the moment they enter this community,” he revealed.

Chief Supt. Adotey warned that police enforcement alone cannot resolve the deep-seated problem and urged the elders to use their influence to address it.

“We need your help. As the custodians of our culture and moral compass of this town, I implore you to use your respected authority to help us reclaim our youth and restore the good name of Teshie. We must work together to tackle substance abuse, instil discipline, and provide hope and alternatives for our young people before this situation deteriorates further.”
