President Mahama meets Chief Justice, Attorney General and others over recurrent mismanagement of public funds identified in auditor-general’s report

President John Dramani Mahama is set to convene a high-level meeting with the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and other key stakeholders to address the recurring mismanagement of public funds identified in the Auditor-General’s Annual Report.

According to the President, the meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, aims to develop lasting solutions to what he described as “unpatriotic behaviour” and to establish a fast-track system for the prosecution of persons implicated in the reports.

Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards/Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives of the Public Services of Ghana, President Mahama said offenders found guilty of financial infractions should serve a minimum of six months in prison to serve as a deterrent.

“I have been watching the Public Accounts Committee, and it’s so pathetic. Why must we, every year, congregate and hear all kinds of atrocious things, recklessness with public funds and resources?” the President lamented.

He stressed that his Thursday meeting with the Chief Justice and the Attorney General will focus on establishing a swift judicial process for dealing with public officials whose actions or negligence lead to financial losses to the state.

“We must have a fast-track process, before you know it, Nsawam, six months,” he said, referring to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

President Mahama further noted that without strong punitive measures, the misuse of public funds will persist.

“Until there’s a deterrent, we’ll continue to hear of massive misappropriations year after year. The Auditor-General’s report cites infractions amounting to about GH₵15 billion. Can you imagine what that money could do?” he asked.

He also pointed out that Ghana has yet to fully implement certain constitutional provisions regarding the Auditor-General’s report, particularly the establishment of a special committee by Parliament to enforce the findings and recommendations made after Public Accounts Committee hearings.

The conference, held under the theme “Strengthening Public Sector Leadership and Governance to Enhance Service Delivery,” brought together leaders across the public service to discuss reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and ethical leadership in state institutions.
