Desmond De-Graft Paitoo calls for law to empower PAC to demand accountability from Attorney-General

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has called for the enactment of a law to empower the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to demand accountability from the Attorney-General on cases involving state officials cited for misconduct and the misappropriation of public funds.

Mr. Paitoo, who also serves as a member of the PAC, expressed concern that the committee currently lacks the authority to prosecute corrupt government officials and civil servants who appear before it.

He argued that granting the committee the legal mandate to either demand progress reports or track the status of cases referred to the Attorney-General’s office would significantly strengthen Ghana’s accountability and anti-corruption framework.

Speaking in an interview on Dwaboase on Power FM and TV XYZ with NK Obrempong on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Mr. Paitoo stressed the need for greater transparency in how referrals from the PAC are handled.

“The Public Accounts Committee should have the legal backing to demand accountability from the Attorney-General on cases referred to that office. As it stands now, the PAC itself has no power to prosecute,” he stated.

The Public Accounts Committee is mandated to scrutinize how public funds are disbursed and utilized, and to refer individuals found culpable of financial mismanagement to the Attorney-General for further investigation and prosecution.
