Gold Board unfazed by political pressure in fight against illicit gold trading – Deputy CEO assures

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Richard Nunekpeku, has assured that the agency will not yield to political pressure in its ongoing crackdown on illegal gold trading.

His assurance follows intensified enforcement operations to curb gold smuggling and illicit trading, which recently led to the arrest of 25 individuals in Accra.

“At GoldBod, if you fall foul of the law, we don’t see party colours. No call from anybody will make us succumb to pressure,” Mr. Nunekpeku stated.

“We will continue to do our work within the confines of the law, respect the rights of every individual we arrest, and ensure they have a fair opportunity to be represented by a lawyer of their choice in court.”

He stressed that the agency will not compromise its integrity or release suspects based on external influence.

“We will not, in any way or manner, release or deal with anybody because a call has come from somewhere,” he warned.

Mr. Nunekpeku further disclosed that since the inauguration of the Ghana Gold Board, the institution has not received any interference from political figures or external parties, a development he said reinforces the Board’s independence and credibility.

“So far, that message has gone down well with everybody, and we’ve not been receiving such calls,” he noted.

He emphasized the agency’s continued collaboration with law enforcement bodies to ensure the successful prosecution of offenders, reaffirming GoldBod’s commitment to sanitizing Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem.
