President John Dramani Mahama has received 10 separate petitions calling for the removal of key heads of public institutions, the Special Prosecutor and senior leadership of the EC.
Ten petitions have been filed seeking the removal of key public officials in Ghana, seven target EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies, Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, while three call for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
The petitions cite alleged misconduct, incompetence, abuse of office, and failure to fulfil mandates.
In the case of the EC leadership, one petitioner lists 12 counts including cronyism and gross incompetence; for the Special Prosecutor, the claims focus on inefficiency and undermining the office’s reputation.
The petitions have been referred to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for assessment.
Removal of the EC officials, appointed under Article 70, requires a finding of misbehaviour or incompetence under Article 146, followed by a special committee investigation and presidential recommendation.
The Special Prosecutor’s removal follows Section 15 of Act 959, involving presidential submission, Chief Justice assessment, and a special investigative committee.
Public reactions are mixed: some view the petitions as constitutional oversight, while others caution against undermining institutional independence.
Supporters of the Special Prosecutor petition highlight perceived underperformance in high-profile corruption cases.
