Police launch special yuletide operation in Tamale; One Suspect dead after gunfire exchange

The Northern Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, has launched an intensified security operation aimed at clamping down on criminal activities within the Tamale Metropolis ahead of the festive season.

The operation, which forms part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety during the Christmas and New Year period, targets criminal enclaves known for drug peddling and related offences.

According to the Police, several intelligence-led raids have already been carried out in identified hotspots, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects involved in various criminal acts.

All arrested individuals have since been processed for court, with their cases currently before the Tamale Circuit Court.

During one of the operations on Monday, December 1, 2025, a suspect reportedly opened fire on officers, triggering a gun battle.

The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead. His body has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital for autopsy and further investigations.

The Northern Regional Police Command is urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with officers as the service intensifies efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful Yuletide within the metropolis.

The statement was signed by Chief Inspector Alhassan Luckman Niendow, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer.
