Obasanjo hails Mahama’s leadership as Accra reset secretariat launches at G20 summit

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has announced the formal commencement of the Acca Reset’s interim Secretariat in Ghana, praising President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in driving a new global development model for the Global South.

Delivering the message on behalf of President Mahama at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, Obasanjo said the Accra Reset has significantly expanded its Circle of Leaders to include more than two dozen former heads of state and leaders of international organisations across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Obasanjo conveyed President Mahama’s appreciation to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, commending his “clarity, courage and profound commitment to justice” in steering the current G20 cycle.

President Mahama also serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations.

Describing the Accra Reset as a fundamental shift in development philosophy, Obasanjo said the initiative seeks to move Global South economies away from “an economy of dependency” created by traditional aid and loans.

“To move forward, we must re-architect our economies based on trade and investment,” he declared.

He added that the Reset aims to reshape development cooperation into a system that is “country-led, regionally empowered and globally coherent,” breaking away from decades of top-down development models that have long defined North–South relations.

The launch of the Secretariat marks a new operational phase for the initiative, which President Mahama has championed as a platform for ensuring that global governance reforms are co-created and negotiated fairly, rather than inherited from historical power imbalances.

A High-Level Panel is being established to produce a landmark report on restructuring global governance.

The report will be submitted to a commissioning authority made up of Heads of State from both the Global North and Global South.

Obasanjo also praised President Ramaphosa’s G20 presidency for advancing key priorities such as a more equitable global financial system, global health resilience, fair technology partnerships and expanding Global South influence in multilateral governance.

He said the Accra Reset is ready to work closely with the G20, describing it as “connective tissue interlinking the public, private and civil factions of Global South societies.”

The initiative seeks to shift international development from aspirational targets to workable business models capable of delivering real and sustainable transformation, reflecting President Mahama’s pragmatic vision for economic renewal across the Global South.
