Gov’t will continue to make corruption and abuse of office unattractive – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that corruption and abuse of public office are made unattractive.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the measures instituted by the government on all fronts are aimed at checkmating public office holders and appointees under the John Mahama administration to ensure good conduct.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, told journalists at the Government Accountability Series that President John Mahama had introduced a Code of Conduct for public officers, enforced the assets declaration regime, and implemented commitment authorisation, among other strategies, to ensure appointees live up to set standards.

“If you have a system where no proper checks are put in place, human nature is such that the tendency will be for people to be tempted to engage in such activities. President Mahama has been aware of this from day one. That is why he launched the Code of Conduct for public officials who work under him. That is also why he insisted that by a certain date, everybody should file their asset declaration forms with the Auditor-General. He has also introduced what we call commitment authorisation. In other words, most corruption scandals arise from procurement,” he emphasised.

He said the President has established commitment authorisation through the Finance Minister, requiring that every procurement above a certain threshold must obtain prior approval.

“If you don’t get it, the Finance Minister is simply not going to pay. That is what it means. Through that process, requests for procurement and related procedures can be scrutinised, and any unlawful acts or activities likely to lead to corruption can be flagged. In this way, corruption can be prevented even before it occurs,” he stressed.

He further alluded to strict government oversight to ensure full compliance.

“But that happens when you have strict oversight, and that is currently what is happening. That is why you don’t find corruption happening,” he intimated.
