The Ghanaian government has refuted claims that it demanded payments from the family of Nana Agyei Ahyia for travel arrangements to Latvia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected as false and misleading claims circulating on social media that the government mishandled the arrangements to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unusual circumstances while studying at Riga Technical University in Latvia.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Ministry stated that it has maintained constant and transparent communication with the family and has neither demanded nor received any payment to facilitate travel for the deceased’s relatives.
It emphasized that the Government of Ghana is fully covering the cost of travel for two nominated family members and a pathologist to Latvia.
The Ministry explained that the planned travel, initially scheduled for January 31, 2026, did not materialize due to delays in visa issuance, noting that the family members failed to present all the required documents at the time of their visa appointments.
“In furtherance of this commitment, the Ministry actively facilitated the visa application process for the nominated family members, who were initially scheduled to travel by January 31, 2026.
However, this travel did not take place due to delays in visa issuance by the relevant authorities. It must be clearly stated that, at the time of their visa appointments, the family members failed to present all the requisite documentation.”
Once the outstanding documents were provided, the Ministry said it promptly facilitated their submission to the relevant embassy.
The Ministry further clarified that the document in the possession of the deceased’s mother was not a confirmed airline ticket but an itinerary generated solely to support the visa application process. Travel could not proceed because the passports were still with the embassy.
The Ministry described the circulation of contrary claims as a deliberate distortion of facts, warning that such misinformation undermines public confidence and detracts from efforts to establish the truth surrounding the student’s death.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and to pursuing justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia.
