President John Dramani Mahama has hinted that Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang will soon brief the Cabinet on the progress of the Women’s Development Bank and its subsequent rollout.
According to the President, the Vice President is leading the charge and will soon unveil the structure and objectives of the Women’s Bank.
He made this disclosure at the launch of the SheaPark Resource Hub in Wa, Upper West Region, on January 31, 2026.
The SheaPark Resource Hub is a flagship intervention aimed at revitalizing the region’s economy through industrialization and value addition within the shea sector, positioning Upper West as a key player in Ghana’s agro-industrial transformation agenda.
“We are also far advanced with the establishment of the Women’s Bank. The Vice President has been leading it, and they’ve made significant progress. She hinted to me that they will soon be bringing a presentation to Cabinet to explain the structure and objectives of the bank,” he revealed.
President Mahama expressed optimism that the bank will help women across the country increase their capital and expand their trading activities.
“This bank is going to help women establish their businesses. In the northern sector, we know that shea is one of the important industries that women participate in,” he added.
The launch of the SheaPark Resource Hub was attended by Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and the Overlord of the Waila State, His Royal Highness Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, as well as Members of Parliament from the region and other government appointees.
Meanwhile, the government supplied farm safety gear to women who trade in shea.
President Mahama mentioned, “We promised them Wellington boots, and we have supplied 3,000 pairs of boots, as well as 3,200 pairs of gloves.
One of the dangers of shea nut picking is snake bites and scorpion stings. These boots will help our women when they go into the bush to pick the nuts, protecting them against these dangers.”
He also added that the Women’s Bank in the Upper West Region will target mothers working in the shea nut industry.
“During the season when shea nuts are being picked, they will be given small credits so they can go into the bush and pick the nuts. As cooperatives, they can hire tricycles to take them further into the bush to pick the shea nuts, and the tricycles will bring them back with the nuts so they no longer have to carry the heavy baskets on their heads,” he emphasized.
