The Nkwanta North District Assembly in Kpassa welcomed Commissioner-General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Anthony Ntem, and his delegation on an official visit.
This important meeting, attended by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Dordoe Kudjoe Isaiah, alongside esteemed traditional authorities, Assembly officials, and representatives from various border communities, aimed to delve into pressing issues impacting the district, with a particular focus on border management and the welfare of those living in these sensitive areas.
During the deliberations, the Commissioner-General underscored the critical need for robust border management strategies and fostered a dialogue emphasizing the vital collaboration required between local communities and established state institutions. The discussions were comprehensive, touching upon several key areas of concern. Paramount among these were the prevailing security challenges experienced along the border. Furthermore, the state of the physical boundary markers and the integrity of the international boundary itself were thoroughly examined. The dynamics of relationships between the Ghanaian border communities and their counterparts across the international line were also a central theme.
Beyond the geopolitical aspects, the meeting placed a strong emphasis on human security issues. Participants highlighted existing infrastructure deficits that hinder development, ongoing livelihood challenges faced by residents, and the persistent difficulties in accessing essential social services. A significant portion of the dialogue involved community members articulating the hardships imposed by border barriers, which impede their freedom of movement and significantly disrupt their economic activities. In response, residents presented a heartfelt appeal for substantial improvements in critical areas, including road infrastructure, educational facilities, healthcare services, and market infrastructure, all of which are vital for their well-being and economic growth.
In his address, Major General Anthony Ntem offered a firm assurance to the assembled communities. He pledged that all the concerns raised would be diligently relayed to the appropriate government institutions, ensuring they receive the necessary attention and prompt action. The DCE, Hon. Dordoe Kudjoe Isaiah, expressed his gratitude for the Commissioner-General’s visit and echoed the sentiment, earnestly appealing for the needs of the people to be championed within their respective ministries to facilitate timely solutions. As part of the visit’s agenda, the delegation also journeyed to the Togo border to conduct a firsthand assessment of the situation on the ground and engage directly with officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and immigration services.
