The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has warned Ghanaians against engaging in religious bigotry.
He said Ghana Police Service will not hesitate to deal with persons who publish content on social media or incite to threaten the country’s peace and religious harmony.
Mr Yohuno’s warning follows the arrest of a pastor and an imam over alleged religiously inflammatory comments made on social media.
The arrest sparked controversy both on traditional and social media platforms throughout the week.
At a meeting between the Police Service and religious leaders at the Police Headquarters on Friday, August 14, the IGP called for interfaith coexistence.
He was also swift to add that the police would take firm action against activities that threaten religious harmony and peaceful coexistence, adding that such isolated acts of religious intolerance could escalate into chaos if left unchecked.
“May this matter serve as a clear reminder that the law works,” he advised.
He continued, “We have seen nations where small sparks were allowed to fester until they grew into civil strife, destroying communities, markets, schools and places of worship.”
