The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a two-day sensitisation exercise for traders and market women at Kumasi’s Kejetia Market on the government’s planned ban on Styrofoam products.
The programme seeks to educate traders and the public on the environmental and health impacts of Styrofoam while promoting the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives.
It began with a float through key streets of Kumasi from Angola Junction through Kumasi Dubai to the Kejetia Market followed by an engagement with traders at the Kejetia Dubai area.
Speaking at the event, Acting EPA Chief Executive Officer Nana Ama Browne Klutse announced that the ban will take effect on January 1, 2027. She said the measure aims to curb environmental pollution and address health risks linked to the use of Styrofoam in food packaging.
Klutse urged traders and consumers to start switching to alternatives such as paper, bamboo and sugarcane-based packaging.
The EPA said it will intensify public education and stakeholder engagements in the lead-up to the ban.
