Ghana Set for Digital Trade Transformation Under UN Cargo Documents Convention

Ghana is positioning itself to improve the efficiency of its maritime trade sector as it prepares to host the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Negotiable Cargo Documents, also known as the Accra Convention, on Monday, 26 October 2026, in Accra.

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the Ministry of Transport, has held a media workshop to prepare journalists for the ceremony.

The Convention provides a legal framework for the use of electronic negotiable cargo documents in international trade, reducing reliance on traditional paper-based systems. The move is expected to reduce delays, cut administrative costs, improve transaction security and facilitate access to trade finance for businesses engaged in cross-border trade.

Speaking at the media engagement in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, stressed the need for public education and stakeholder collaboration to ensure the effective adoption and implementation of the Convention.

He said the Authority remained committed to working with relevant ministries, government agencies, industry stakeholders and international partners to improve trade procedures and protect the interests of shippers. Professor Gyampo noted that predictable and efficient trade processes were essential to reducing avoidable costs and strengthening the competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses.

Madam Stella Ansah, Director of Foreign Trade and Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, speaking on behalf of the sector minister, said Ghana was pleased to host the signing ceremony. She described the occasion as a source of national pride and an opportunity for Ghana to demonstrate leadership in international trade.

The ceremony will take place alongside activities marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). The initiative is expected to support the digitalisation of international trade documentation, strengthen confidence in electronic transactions and enhance Ghana’s position as a trade and logistics hub in West Africa.
