Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured Ghanaians that the ongoing Akwatia by-election will be peaceful and free from disruptions.
Speaking to journalists after touring polling centres on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, IGP Yohuno said the violence that marred the Ablekuma North rerun earlier this year would not be repeated.
He noted that police personnel had undergone intensive training and were fully prepared to maintain law and order.
According to him, the Akwatia by-election would “set the tone for future elections” in Ghana.
“Ablekuma North violence is a thing of the past. We are moving forward, and as I assured you, this will be an election that will set the tone for future elections,” the IGP said.
“Other elections may have ended with some skirmishes, but I assure you that this one, with God on our side, with our preparations, training, and men ready to discharge their duties without fear or favour will be different.”
Addressing concerns that the heavy police presence could intimidate voters, IGP Yohuno insisted that officers were deployed to ensure safety, not fear.
“With our presence, voters can feel safe to come and cast their ballots, and they are happy with the deployment,” he added.
He further disclosed that additional reinforcements would be sent in during the vote-counting process.
Voting is currently underway, with more than 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations.
The by-election follows the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the constituency’s Member of Parliament.
